শিব পুরাণে যে দ্বাদশ জ্যোতির্লিঙ্গের উল্লেখ আছে তার মধ্যে অন্যতম হল ওমকারেশ্বর| এটি ভারতের মধ্যপ্রদেশের নর্মদা নদীর উপর মান্ধাতা নামক দ্বীপে ওমকার পাহাড়ে অবস্হিত| স্হানীয়রা বলেন একাদশ শতাব্দীর প্রাচীন এই দ্বীপটির আকৃতি ওম চিন্হের মতো| কথিত আছে হিন্দু ধর্মের সকল তীর্থযাত্রাই অস্ম্পূর্ণ থেকে যায় এই ওমকারেশ্বরে এসে নর্মদার জল না ঢাললে| নর্মদা নদীর উপর ওম আকৃতির এই শান্ত সুন্দর শহরটি শৈব ভক্তদের এক অন্যতম তীর্থস্হান | ওমকারেশ্বর শুধুমাত্র হিন্দুক্ষেত্র হিসেবেই প্রসিদ্ধি লাভ করেনি, এখানকার প্রাকৃতিক পরিবেশ, সৌন্দর্য এবং এর নির্জনতাও যেকোনো প্রকৃতিপ্রেমী ও পর্যটকদের কাছে বেশ আকর্ষণীয় | হিন্দু পুরাণমতে মহাদেব এই ওমকারেশ্বরেই এসেছিলেন বিশ্রাম নিতে ও রাত কাটাতে| তাই এই ওমকারেশ্বর মন্দিরে আজও মহাদেবের নিত্য শয়ন আরতি হয় | এই ওমকারেশ্বর থেকে প্রায় ৪৩ কিলোমিটার দূরে রয়েছে বাকাওয়ান গ্রাম| নর্মদা নদীর তীরে অবস্হিত এই গ্রামটিতেই একমাত্র নর্মদেশ্বর শিবলিঙ্গ পাওয়া যায় ; নর্মদা নদীর পাথর থেকে তৈরী হয় নর্মদেশ্বর| গ্রামের প্রতিটি বাড়িতেই এই শিবলিঙ্গ তৈরী করেন গ্রামবাসীরা, এটিই তাদের মূল জীবিকা| বিভিন্ন আকৃতির তৈরী এই নর্মদেশ্বর মধ্যপ্রদেশের এই প্রত্যন্ত গ্রাম থেকে সারা ভারতবর্ষেই শুধু নয় পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশেও রপ্তানি করা হয় | নর্মদেশ্বর তৈরীর জন্যই গ্রামটি প্রসিদ্ধ | কথিত আছে এই গ্রামের মাটিতে প্রতিটা পাথরে নর্মদেশ্বর বিরাজ করেন| তাই কখনও ওমকারেশ্বর এলে এই গ্রামটিতে একবার আসতেই হয় |
Amongst 12 Jyotirlingas Omkareshwar is one of them according to Shiva Puran. It is situated at the top of the hill Mandhata on river Narmada in the Madhya Pradesh of Central India. The shape of this 11th century’s ancient island is like the OM sign according to the locals. Making of Narmadeshwar from the river stones is the main livelihood of the villagers. They supply these Narmadeshwar Shivalingas not only entire India but also import outside India in the different countries. This village is popularly known for making of Narmadeshwar. It is told that Narmadeshwar exists in each stone of this village; so one has to visit here once from Omkareshwar.
